Caddo Magnet High Recognized as National Green Ribbon School

On Friday, May 6th, the U.S. Department of Education named Caddo Parish Magnet High School a Green Ribbon School for its environmental efforts. As one of only 27 Green Ribbon Schools, Magnet is honored to receive this award. Schools and districts are recognized for reducing their environmental impact and costs, improving the health and wellness of students and staff, and providing effective environmental and sustainability education.

Magnet’s environmental accolades include two-time National Blue Ribbon School status, a state championship in the Envirothon competition, and certification as a Schoolyard Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. Magnet initiatives include the “Be the Change” environmental program founded by former Greens Club president Diya Desai. Funded by the Jane Goodall Foundation grant, Be the Change is a campaign raising awareness about plastic bag pollution. Although Magnet recognizes the importance of novel projects, it also recognizes the necessity of putting in the work every day. Greens Club hosts weekly campus composting and recycling activities. Students have also built keyhole gardens at Shreveport Parks and Recreation (SPAR)’s Valencia Community Center and learned about sustainability at the We Grow Together! Campus.

Environmental cost-saving initiatives include new thermostats, roofs, and HVAC systems. Magnet participates in Cenergestic’s energy savings plan. Requirements include the completion of an energy conservation checklist for all classrooms and offices and utilizing energy-efficient thermostats. Other environmental cost-saving initiatives include new roofs and HVAC systems. To reduce stress, Magnet offers voluntary yoga and knitting sessions and a biannual Picnic.
