Mardi Gras Bead Drive

Mardi Gras is a fun holiday with lots of food, purple, green, and gold decorations, and parades. A lot people don't think about it but the beads that are bought and thrown out during the parades are all made of plastic. Most people collect beads at the parades and then throw them away when they are done with them. The beads that aren't collected end up in storm drains and trees where they will remain until someone collects them. The Mardi Gras Krewes of Shreveport spend millions of dollars on beads alone every year.

Magnet's plan, that we hope other schools will join us in, is to collect old beads from anyone willing to donate and then give them to the krewes to reuse. Our hope is that by reusing beads, less money will be spent and the accumulation of beads in storm drains and trees will decrease. If you were at Magnet last year, you may have seen the bead collection bins throughout the school. If you have beads sitting at your house, consider donating them to the Magnet bead drive! Look out for the collection bins; we will be putting them out soon!
